Many great goodbye notes went out inside the building today. If any of you would like to use this blog to pass those on as well in the coming days, we are more than happy to accomodate you. Just e-mail therockoftruth@gmail.com.

A well-placed management source confirmed Friday that the official number of accepted buyout-takers is 24 in the newsroom. If you believe the earlier statements by upper management that they needed 40 people to avoid a layoff, that means 16 news staffers will have to be cut to satisfy corporate.
And if you believe that, I'd like to talk to you about real estate opportunities on Galveston Island.

If you are keeping up with span of control issues, no one above the level of news editor or assignment editor took the buyout. That means the total number of worker bees dropped a little while the number of edito/managers remained about the same. Supposedly, the number of editors who will be returned to reporting ranks will be small. This could mean that 10 or more line editors in Local News alone could be targeted for involuntary departure while the upper ranks of editors (department heads and management group members) remain status quo.
