Today's installment comes from a staff member who took the buyout in 2006. The staffer was a veteran who served in several different roles at the Dallas Morning News. The staffer, who is freelancing, requested anonymity and we honored that because the information is valuable.

This is wonderful advice. Think about all the possibilities that are open to you, inside and outside journalism. You have talents that few others in the working world possess. I will remind everyone that nearly every former DMN staffer Craig Flournoy and I spoke to for our 2007 Columbia Journalism Review article on the DMN buyouts and layoffs said she or he was happier after leaving the paper. -Tracy Everbach
